The Autumn 2015 issue of Arrhythmia & Electrophysiology Review opens with a Foreword by Section Editor Karl-Heinz Kuck and Andreas Metzner, looking at advances in the ablation of persistent atrial fibrillation (AF). Related to this theme is a review by Sohal and colleagues entitled Is Mapping of Complex Fractionated Electrograms Obsolete? which examines evidence for the use of CFAE ablation in current practice and explores new strategies to pinpoint the regions responsible for AF persistence thereby offering the potential to improve outcomes in ablation of persistent AF. Jadidi and Arentz have written a commentary to accompany Sohal’s review – A Decade of CFAE Mapping: Still Seeking More Specific Tools to Identify Sources and Substrate of Persistent Atrial Fibrillation. Atrioventricular conduction disturbances and arrhythmias before, during or after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) can have important consequences for patient outcomes and management pathways. Lee and colleagues discuss optimal pacing strategies for this high-risk patient group. Current best practice in the use of anticoagulation in atrial fibrillation is summarised by Katritsis et al, and complemented by Lip and Rahmat’s review, Monitoring the Effects and Antidotes of the Non-vitamin K Oral Anticoagulants.
